From Massive Cores to Massive Stars
نویسنده
چکیده
The similarity between the mass and spatial distributions of prestellar gas cores in star-forming clouds and young stars in clusters provides strong circumstantial evidence that these gas cores are the direct progenitors of individual stars. Here I describe a physical model for the evolution of massive cores into stars, starting with the intial phases of collapse and fragmentation, through disk formation and fragmentation, the later phases of stellar feedback, and finally interaction of the newly formed stars with their environments. This model shows that a direct mapping from cores to stars is the natural physical outcome of massive core evolution, and thereby allows us to explain many of the properties of young star clusters as direct imprints of their gas-phase progenitors.

Limiting Accretion onto Massive Stars by Fragmentation-induced Starvation
Massive stars influence their surroundings through radiation, winds, and supernova explosions far out of proportion to their small numbers. However, the physical processes that initiate and govern the birth of massive stars remain poorly understood. Two widely discussed models are monolithic collapse of molecular cloud cores and competitive accretion. To learn more about massive star formation,...
متن کاملHigh Mass Star Formation by Gravitational Collapse of Massive Cores
The current generation of millimeter interferometers have revealed a population of compact (r ∼< 0.1 pc), massive (M ∼ 100 M⊙) gas cores that are the likely progenitors of massive stars. I review models for the evolution of these objects from the observed massive core phase through collapse and into massive star formation, with particular attention to the least wellunderstood aspects of the pro...
متن کاملTwo Massive, Low-luminosity Cores toward Infrared Dark Clouds
This article presents high-resolution interferometric mosaics in the 850μm waveband of two massive, quiescent infrared dark clouds. The two clouds were chosen based on their likelihood to represent environments preceding the formation of massive stars. The brightest compact sources detected in each cloud have masses ≈ 110M and ≈ 60M with radii < 0.1 pc, implying mean densities of 〈n〉 ≈ 10 cm−3 ...
متن کاملFragmentation in massive star formation.
Studies of evolved massive stars indicate that they form in a clustered mode. During the earliest evolutionary stages, these regions are embedded within their natal cores. Here we present high-spatial-resolution interferometric dust continuum observations disentangling the cluster-like structure of a young massive star-forming region. The derived protocluster mass distribution is consistent wit...
متن کاملHot Molecular Cores and the Formation of Massive Stars
It has been proposed that some hot molecular cores (HMCs) harbor a young embedded massive star, which heats an infalling envelope and accretes mass at a rate high enough to “choke off” an incipient HII region. This class of HMCs would mark the youngest phase known of massive star formation. In order to test this hypothesis, we model this type of object calculating the radiative transfer through...
